Lactulose

Syrup

Lactulose Syrup is an osmotic laxative formulation used for the management of constipation and conditions requiring softening of stools. It works by drawing water into the intestine, thereby softening stools and promoting bowel movements.
The formulation also helps reduce ammonia absorption in patients with hepatic encephalopathy by acidifying the colonic contents and promoting elimination of ammonia from the body. It is commonly used under medical supervision for maintaining regular bowel function and improving digestive comfort.

Mechanism

Lactulose is metabolized by colonic bacteria into organic acids that increase osmotic pressure in the colon, leading to water retention, stool softening, and stimulation of bowel movement. It also helps reduce systemic ammonia levels by converting ammonia into non-absorbable ammonium ions.
